Chapter Sixteen

NOVA WATCHED THE MYRIAD of emotions that played across Kane’s face. Offering him an affectionate smile, she stood on her tiptoes and brushed her lips over his in the most tender of kisses, a gentle reminder of her words.

This broken man had captured her heart and soul.

Once more enfolding her in his arms, Kane’s hand sifted through the untamed waves of her hair. The delicate contact sent a shudder through her that had nothing to do with the cold, her nerves alight with sensation. Being swaddled against his chest made her feel as though he’d burn the world down to keep her safe, and it was an oddly comforting sensation.

Exhaling, Kane found her eyes. “You have awakened something in me I thought was long dead.”

“Just you wait.” Her hand reached up to cup his cheek, but her smile turned mischievous. “I have more than one trick up my sleeve.”

Kane’s responding grin was slow, sly, but his eyes shone with an appreciation Nova knew she didn’t deserve. To avoid him thinking her too sentimental, Nova gave his cheek a light pat.

“Don’t get all mushy on me, vampire.” Pouting her lips, Nova quirked an eyebrow.

“No mush, got it.”

Pushing his chest away from her, Nova frowned as she remembered her confrontation with his fledgling. “You think Elsie was freaked out?”

Listening, Kane pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. “She’s bringing the calvary.”

Nova had heard the light steps from the hallway as they approached, then dead silence before a sharp knock on the door. “Sire?”

Kane shook his head, impassivity settling into his features once more. Departing from her company, he opened the door and cocked an eyebrow. “Can we be of assistance?”

Reed stood in the doorway, flanked by Elsie and Garrett. His second peered past Kane and settled on Nova. Offering him a smile without sincerity, she said, “I’m beating things out of him.”

Garrett scowled at her but said nothing.

Jaw clenching, Reed looked back to Elsie in expectation as she glanced back and forth between Kane and Nova with uncertainty. “Are you okay, sire? When you didn’t come find me, I got worried.”

“Of course, Elsie. Nova and I were just having a conversation.”

“With her teeth?” Garrett asked, aggravated.

Her cheeks heated. “I’m sorry, Elsie, I don’t know what possessed me. My wolf is rather edgy at the moment, and I, unfortunately, took it out on you. I apologize.”

Awestruck for a moment, Elsie blinked but quickly covered her surprise with a smile. “Oh, no harm done. I am glad, though, that I saw your wolf! Marco said you’re by far the prettiest in the den.”

“Oh, did he? Quite the charmer, him.”

Elsie’s bobbed her head enthusiastically. “Before you guys leave tomorrow, I’ve got a few things for him. We got to talking, and it turns out he likes these old candies that I loved when I was a kid. Went to the store around the corner and bam, there they were. Couldn’t resist buying a few for him.”

Nova laughed and was pleasantly surprised to see
